DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision and direction of the Dean of Health Sciences, perform designated duties as an instructor in the psychiatric technician program. The primary responsibility is to teach 10 units per semester of courses in the area of nursing science and psychiatric technician practice.


Responsibilities and Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Instruct courses in the psychiatric technician program as stated in the credit course outline and the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technician regulations.
  2. Assist the Division Dean of Health Sciences in cooperating with campus and community groups to provide programs, courses, and information relevant to the needs of the students and the program.
  3. Assist students in achieving stated course objectives. Evaluate the progress of each student and notify students in need of counseling services and/or tutorial assistance. Track student learning outcomes and maintain records of student learning outcomes.
  4. Participate in the departmental process of curriculum review, modification, and the assessment of student learning outcomes in order to make the program successful.
  5. Assist the Division Dean in the preparation of required reports. Provide information and data as requested.
  6. Complete various reports required for student evaluation, course reporting, and budget development.
  7. Attend various departmental, divisional, and campus-wide activities as stipulated.
  8. Participate in departmental, divisional and campus-wide committees as part of the shared governance process or assigned by the Division Dean of Health Sciences.
  9. Perform other necessary duties such as assure the smooth functioning of the Health Science Division and Nursing Programs, as assigned by the Division Dean and as outlined in Board policy.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Have approval as a psychiatric technician instructor by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians with the following qualifications:

  • Hold current California active license as a Registered Nurse; and
  • Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited school; or a valid teaching credential; or have completed a minimum of one year full-time teaching experience in a state accredited or approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing, or psychiatric technician school within the last five years; or met community college or state university teaching requirements in California; and
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a registered nurse or licensed psychiatric technician within the last 5 years.

OR

  • Hold current California active license as a psychiatric technician; and
  • Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited school; and
  • Have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a psychiatric technician; one (1) year shall be in teaching or clinical supervision, or a combination thereof, in a state accredited or approved psychiatric technician school within the last five (5) years; or have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in mental health administration or education within the last five (5) years.

Possess sensitivity to and demonstrated success teaching in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic environment such as a community college.

Be free of any formal disciplinary action by the California Board of Registered Nursing and the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians, or other professional licensing agency of this state, other States, or U.S. Territories.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Nursing, Counseling Psychology, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric technician scope of practice OR experience working psychiatric technicians.
  • Expertise in use of computers for teaching and management of online course information. Familiarity and ability to teach in a distance learning environment.
  • Ability to teach in a technologically rich environment.
  • Experience in evaluation of clinical performance of health care professionals.
  • Ability to teach in a large lecture format.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student learning and demonstrated commitment to promoting the success of all students in an open access-learning environment.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic backgrounds, cultures, preparation, learning styles and/or disabilities.


Supplemental Information
