Job Summary

The Cleveland Institute of Music seeks a dynamic and skilled viola teacher to join its faculty and teach primarily in the Academy In keeping with CIM's Mission, Vision and Institutional Learning Goals, the Institute cultivates musical artistry among a broad range of students, including the college-level Conservatory student, pre-college students receiving instruction through CIM's Academy program, as well as college-level students seeking music instruction through one of CIM's partnership with Case Western Reserve University. This position is intended to fill applied instructional needs within CIM's Academy and Public Programs. The instructional scope of this role therefore includes teaching applied lessons to beginner-level students with little or no previous experience on the instrument, to high school students preparing for serious collegiate study, all the way through the occasional adult learners through our Continuing Education program. All Academy students, from beginners to advanced learners, participate in a comprehensive, rigorous curriculum that includes core musicianship classes and ensembles.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

ACADEMY TEACHING

  • Teach weekly applied lessons to youth of varying ages and stages of development, from beginners to advanced, and studio classes as assigned.
  • Teach assigned students within CIM's Musical Pathway Fellowship, a program within the Academy that provides opportunities and resources for Black and Latinx students to thrive.
  • Prepare students for regular performance participation.
  • Prepare students for various assessment requirements that exist within the Academy Curriculum.
  • Potentially coach chamber music or sectionals as assigned.
  • Maintain regular communication with students, families, and staff.
  • Participate and contribute meaningfully to faculty meetings.
  • Assess performance jury and audition panels.
  • Participate in recruitment activities and auditions as assigned and work with the Academy staff to develop recruitment strategies.

Education, Experience and Qualifications

A qualified candidate will possess:

  • A master's degree in viola performance or music education with a concentration in strings, or demonstrated relevant experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience working with students of various ages and abilities.
  • A track record as a successful solo, chamber, large ensemble and/or orchestra performer.
  • A broad knowledge of various teaching pedagogies.
  • An extensive knowledge of the diverse repertoire necessary to teach students of varying levels, backgrounds, and experience.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

The successful candidate will need to be available to teach on Saturdays as determined by the CIM Academy curriculum, in addition to teaching collegiate students on weekdays.
