Department:PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT Organizational Unit:Roadway and Bridge (50000074) Position Type:Permanent Full Time/Part Time:Full Time Open Until Filled. $20.23 to $22.25 hourly. Actual salary negotiable based on experience and qualifications. South Area/Palm Bay. Work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Performs entry-level crafts and trades work in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment and may perform related manual labor. Employees may rotate among various pieces of equipment or may be permanently assigned to a specific piece of equipment. REQUIREMENTS: One (1) year of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment, including an excavator, used in the construction of roads and drainage projects;ORsix (6) months of on-the-job training within the County in the operation of minor heavy equipment and be able to demonstrate the ability to achieve departmental standards for operating equipment;ORsuccessful completion of a six (6) month heavy equipment operator training program from an accredited school. Successful completion of coursework in heavy equipment operation at a post-secondary school may be substituted on a year for year basis for a maximum of one (1) year (1,080 class hours [1 school year] = 1 year of experience; 120 class hours = 1 month of experience). Additional qualifying education and/or experience may be substituted on a year for year basis. Experience utilizing a Kaiser or Menzi-Muck walking excavator, or other similar excavator is preferred.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Must possess, or obtain prior to employment, a valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's license and maintain said license during the term of employment. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the safe and effective operation of an excavator and be able to pass a skills test. This is heavy physical work performed mostly off-road along drainage right of ways (ROWs) and involves exposure to water, dirt, muck, moving machinery, dense vegetation, and extreme weather conditions. In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee will be required to perform emergency duties as directed.
