Job Summary :

To provide a assistance to the breastfeeding mother in attaining her individual breastfeeding goals through the Lactation Consultant's skill in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation; the Lactation Consultant functions as member of the multi-disciplinary health care team as a manager, consultant instructor, mentor, and/or preceptor to
other physicians, nurses, health care professionals, and patients and their
families.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Fiscal

a. Coordinates and/or furnishes through sales or rentals appropriate supplies and equipment for management of lactation.

b. Uses resources and supplies efficiently; promoting cost saving and effective use of budget allocation.

c. Manages time productively in the completion of duties and promotes cost saving through delegating assignments and use of proactive scheduling based on acuity and census.

d. Attends product and practice change education and applies such to promote non-salary cost saving.

2. Quality

a. Identifies, analyzes, and formulates a plan of prevention and intervention that results in the attainment of the breastfeeding mother's individual goals.

b. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities including, but not limited to, meaningful use, value based purchasing, application of regulatory measures, work redesign and nurse sensitive indicators.

and implements investigations on issues related to lactation management.

c. Utilizes current research findings in practice as evidenced by at least annual review of current unit policies, procedures and protocols related to the management of the breast feeding couplet and breast milk collection and storage guidelines.

d. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the delivery of nursing care and applies constructive intervention to advance the practice of professional nursing practice as it relates to the nursing couplet.

e. Demonstrates critical thinking, ability to multitask, and provide complete documentation per unit and Hospital standards including critical situations and events.

3. Patient Satisfaction

a. Assist families to obtain information, education and clinical lactation consultation assistance in breastfeeding related services.

b. Conducts/oversees contents and teaching of the breastfeeding preparation classes for expectant and post partum patients. This may include ongoing support groups for parents post discharge.

c. Facilitates proper latch-on and frequency of nursing of the breastfeeding couplet in a therapeutic environment.

d. Assists mothers with common breastfeeding problems; facilitates increased duration of breastfeeding: facilitates successful breastfeeding experiences.

4. Patient Safety

a. Incorporates safe patient care practices into daily routines including, but not limited to, fall prevention, safe patient mobilization, medication administration, and patient identification prior to care.

b. Assesses counsels and supports with lactation problems.

c. Provides support for breast milk suppression for the formula feeding mother including determination of mother-baby nutritional success with milk suppressions and formula feeding, anticipatory guidance, interventions to support success of couplet, and client/family education.

d. Provides information and support for the mother of multiples.

5. Professional Growth

a. Maintains knowledge and expertise in lactation skills and serves as a department expert.

b. Acts as a role model and preceptor to communicate, implement and support unit objectives and standards as they relate to the nursing couplet.

c. Shares clinical expertise by conducting formal and informal in-service programs.

d. Coordinates and/or conducts orientation and continuing education inservices on various topics related to lactation management and equipment to staff and/or health care professionals.

e.Maintains licensure and actively seeks opportunity for growth in such areas as certification, Hospital clinical advancement programs, advanced degree, and nursing shared leadership and council opportunities. 6.Customer Service

a. Initiates and receives referrals from physicians and patients, coordinates the counseling of the nursing couplet as a co-dependent unit, and communicates with physicians and staff the plans of care formulated with the mother-baby couplet.

b. Serves as Clinic/Outreach Consultant : provide early interventions , ongoing counseling, and management of short-term and long-term lactation dysfunctions in association with obstetrician and/or pediatrician. This may involve telephone, office or home visit counseling of the breastfeeding couplet.

c. Meets Hospital identified customer service standards; addresses ethical issues, and promotes commitment to co-workers.

d. Exhibits excellent guest relations to patients, visitors, physicians and co- workers; shows courtesy, compassion and respect; conforms to Service Excellence requirements. This position requires communication and interaction with the public, co-workers, administrators, contacts from other hospitals, schools and/or other departments.

Education and Experience Required:

1. RN graduate of accredited Licensed Practical, Vocational or RN school of Nursing

2. Minimum of 2 years experience in counseling breastfeeding mothers required.

Mandatory Licensure/Certifications:

1. Valid, current RN Indiana license.

2. Clinical Lactation Consultant training and/or International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certificate.

3. BLS certification; may obtain upon hire.
