Scorekeeper (Youth Sports)

Job Summary

Youth Sports Scorekeepers are responsible for player attendance, recording game statistics, and managing the game clock during Youth Sports events (Grades 1st - 8th). Prior knowledge of the assigned sport is desired, but not required. Applicants must be available Saturdays, with some weekday opportunities. Pay rates are determined by the grade level that the applicant is assigned to score keep. Hours are dependent on team registrations.

The Youth Sports Office is currently looking for Scorekeepers for the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons. Scorekeeper training will be provided.

Position Summary

  • Manage the time and score keeping for Youth Sports events.
  • Track all statistical data associated with a youth sports contest (i.e., running score, fouls, etc.) using the official score book or score sheet.
  • Record the running score, time, possession, etc. on an electronic score clock or flip chart.
  • Enforce game rules and regulations per WIAA and MPS Youth Sports guidelines.
  • Alert the official(s) when there is a question about the score, foul, etc. reported
  • Model positive language and behavior.
  • Be professional in the workplace, including dress, always.
  • Assist with the staging of pre-game and post-game activities.
  • Follows, administers, and implements all Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation policies and rules.
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the Part-Time Employee Manual.
  • Have the physical ability to set up/break down sites as needed.
  • Attend any mandatory Scorekeeper trainings.
  • Maintain a safe and organized environment.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.
Supervision Required

  • Works under the direction of the Youth Sports Supervisor and Building/League Director at their assigned work site.
Job Requirements

  • Properly attired with Scorekeeper Uniform.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Basic knowledge of scorekeeping or the general rules of the assigned sport.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs required for this position.
  • Behave and appear in fair, consistent, and professional manner.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to attend all MANDATORY applicable in-service trainings.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous work experience in a public setting with a diverse population.
  • 1st Aid/CPR/AED Certifications (training will be provided if needed).
  • Previous work experience and knowledge in score keeping of assigned sport.
  • Previous experience in taking game stats.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Ability to operate an electronic score clock.
  • Patience in dealing with stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of assigned sport.
  • Must be a team player with a positive, service-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, officials, coaches, patrons, community members, other staff, and support staff.
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships with coworkers and part-time Milwaukee Recreation staff.
  • Ability to participate interactively with a diverse group of youth.
  • Excellent decision-making skills and ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
Working Environment

This environment includes walking, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and possible loud noises when exposed to activities in the gym or similar environment. Staff will be required to supervise groups of children and adults as well as assist in the accommodation of children and/or adults with disabilities (within parameters of provided training).
