Elementary Sports Coach (Youth Sports)

Job Summary

Coach an assigned group of children (grades 1st -5th) emphasizing sport skill development, safety, fair play, sportsmanship, and fun. In addition, teach young athletes the rules, regulations, strategies, equipment, fundamentals of the sport and sportsmanship. Must be available for practices during weekdays in the late afternoons/evenings and available on Saturdays between 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Most Elementary Coaches are assigned by their respective school from September through June (Early Start Schools: August through May) or for the duration of a specific sports season (Fall, Winter, or Spring), but the Youth Sports Office does create a pool of free agent coaches when applicants apply online that are not assigned to a specific school.

Position Summary

  • Attend all scheduled MANDATORY COACHES MEETING.
  • Attend all schedule practices and games.
  • Be responsible for school uniforms and equipment.
  • Provide a safe and fun environment for all student-athletes.
  • Develop a weekly practice plan with the help of the school sports coordinator.
  • Supervise players during practices and competitions.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for youth; teaches positive behavior such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-respect.
  • Make sure that first aid supplies are available to all teams during practices and games.
  • Notify the Youth Sports Office in advance of all forfeited contest.
  • Assist the school's Sports Coordinator with distributing game schedules, league rules, participation paperwork, and practice schedule to players and their families.
  • Submit paysheet to the Youth Sport Office in accordance with the Elementary Coach paysheet schedule.
  • Submit team roster to the Youth Sports Office at least 1 week in advance of first scheduled game.
  • Follow concussion and head injury guidelines set forth by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and Statue 118.293.
  • Evaluates player performance and provide suitable feedback, balancing criticism with positive and motivating comments.
Supervision Required

  • Works under the direction of the School Principal and School Sport Coordinator at assigned school.
  • MPS Recreation Department Youth Sports Office.
Job Requirements

  • Behave and appear in a fair, consistent and professional manner.
  • Ability to attend all MANDATORY meetings and applicable in-service trainings.
  • Ability to communicate instruction and commands to children using clear, simple language.
  • Ability to participate interactively with a diverse group of youth.
  • Availability: Monday-Fridays (dates/times will vary) for practice and Saturday games.

Preferred Experience

  • NAYS Coaching Certification.
  • Previous experience working with children in a public setting that involves diverse populations.
  • Previous experience playing and/or coaching.
  • Teaching certificate.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certification.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of sports rules and regulations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, parents, and staff.
Working Environment

This environment includes walking, climbing, standing for long periods of time, and possible loud noises when exposed to activities in the gym or similar environment. Staff will be required to supervise groups of children and adults as well as assist in the accommodation of children and/or adults with disabilities (within parameters of provided training).
