Kleinschmidt has a future full-time opportunity for a Dam Safety Engineer to manage projects, people, and client relationships. Most locations will be considered. Who You Are

A licensed Professional Engineer with a BS and a minimum of 10 years' experience within the field of dam safety with a focus in either structural or geotechnical engineering.

Skilled Independent Consultant: Approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to conduct Part 12 Dam Safety Inspections or the ability to receive this designation within three years.

Experienced: Experience with concrete and earthen dam safety inspections, seismic design and analysis, risk assessments and potential failure mode evaluation, and familiarity with regulatory and permitting processes. Additionally, the candidate will have experience with structural aspects of concrete and steel construction and/or geotechnical analysis of earthen embankments. Experience participating in and/or facilitating semi-quantitative risk assessments is a plus.

Relationship-focused: Enjoys collaborating with clients and co-workers, has a desire to mentor and coach staff. Ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team while applying civil/structural or geotechnical engineering skills from analysis and design through to construction. In addition to excellent technical skills, the candidate will possess strong communication skills, be self-motivated, and growth-oriented with demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills.

Additional Requirements



  • Available for travel throughout the US and Canada, as needed, typically 10% to 25% of the time
  • Must possess permanent authorization to work in the United States and able to acquire authorization to work in Canada
  • Must possess a valid driver's license


About the Position

The position includes a combination of project, people, and client relationship management for dam safety inspections and projects, and for unique engineering design projects for retrofits, rehabilitation, and new design efforts at existing or proposed dam and hydroelectric project sites. Tasks will include dam safety inspections throughout the United States and Canada and working with appropriate regulators and local agencies to assess the condition of structures and determine potential failure modes and corrective actions if required. This position provides an excellent opportunity to work on a team of technical professionals in the fields of hydroelectric, civil works design, geotechnical engineering, and dam safety.

Our Process

Kleinschmidt strives to provide a great candidate experience. After careful review of resumes, we will notify those we are interested in interviewing. We may ask for more details with an initial screening. Our process normally involves two interviews.
