One of 10 divisions in the UNC OB- GYN department, the Complex Family Planning Division was established in 2013. It is comprised of three faculty and two fellows who provide complex family planning services at UNC Hospitals and the local Planned Parenthood affiliate. The UNC Fellowship in Complex Family Planning has been in existence, with continuously matched fellows, since 2009, and achieved accreditation by the ACGME in February 2021. A Ryan Resident Training Program has been in place since 2008, with abortion and contraception training preceding that for many years.

The UNC Division of Complex Family Planning has achievable opportunities to expand its clinical expertise and reach, with ever-increasing practice locations across the UNC Health System and the State of North Carolina.
