Position Summary |
The Department of Surgery at The University of North Carolina is currently seeking qualified applicants for the role of Pediatric Surgeon. The Division of Pediatric Surgery is among 9 clinical Divisions in the Department of Surgery. The Division currently includes 4 faculty members that provide a broad array of clinical services to provide the highest quality care for injured and critically ill pediatric patients. Candidates will be expected to have demonstrated excellence in all three traditional academic missions: clinical practice, education, and research, as evidenced by experience, outcomes, and references. The candidate must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment, promote teamwork and learning, and lead by example.
Faculty members within the Division of Pediatric Surgery must possess a desire to commit to all three missions of the department and school of medicine, including the clinical, education, and research missions.
Regarding the education mission, faculty members are expected to regularly participate in the education of medical students and residents. Additionally, Pediatric Surgery faculty participate in outreach to our rural referring hospitals.
Regarding the clinical mission, faculty members must be committed to delivering high quality clinical care to the patients of
UNC.
Regarding the research mission, a commitment to any one of a broad array of research interests is desirable, including but not limited to clinical outcomes, health services, basic science, translational, ethics, education, or global surgery initiatives. The Department houses multiple R01 projects and one
NIH-funded training grant for surgery residents who work simultaneously with basic science and clinical mentors. Research achievements of the surgical faculty have led to increased breast conservation in patients with advanced disease treated with pre-operative adjuvant chemotherapy, correction in an animal model of a genetically determined deficit with stem cell transplants, elucidation of the mechanisms of immune dysfunction in burns, and many others. Each surgical division has active research underway in either clinical and/or basic science programs, and the
UNC School of Medicine ranks 17th in the country in total
NIH funding for 2020 and 6th among peer public universities.
This position is being recruited as an open rank appointment at an
FTE between 0.5
FTE and 1.0
FTE. The appointment may also be offered as a fixed term track or tenure/tenure track appointment. The faculty member will be expected to perform both clinical and research duties, along with the academic responsibilities of an educational institution. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Prospective candidates must be Board Certified/Board eligible in General Surgery with Pediatric certification. Chosen candidates must either have a current North Carolina Medical License or be eligible for application. The candidate must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment, promote teamwork and learning, and lead by example. |
