Scientific Programmer IV

As a Scientific Programmer IV at Cherokee Nation Systems Solutions (CNSS) in Charleston, SC, you will be responsible for converting scientific, engineering, and technical problem formulations into computer-processable formats. With a Bachelor's degree as a prerequisite and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, preferably in a federal agency setting, you will apply your extensive knowledge of science, engineering, or advanced mathematics to develop computational solutions.

Scientific Programmer IV Responsibilities Include:



  • Convert scientific, engineering, and technical problem formulations into formats suitable for computer processing.
  • Resolve symbolic formulations, prepare flowcharts, and develop block diagrams to represent complex problems and algorithms.
  • Encode equations and algorithms for processing by computer systems, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Apply extensive knowledge of a branch of science, engineering, or advanced mathematics, such as differential equations or numerical analysis, to develop computational models and algorithms.
  • Understand the capabilities and limitations of computer systems, optimizing algorithms and code for performance and scalability.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and other technical experts to understand problem formulations and requirements.
  • Develop and implement computational solutions to address scientific, engineering, and technical challenges.
  • Test and validate computational models and algorithms, ensuring accuracy and reliability of results.
  • Document programming processes, including specifications, algorithms, and code, for future reference and replication.
  • Work under general supervision, relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals, while demonstrating a certain degree of creativity and latitude in problem-solving.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Scientific Programmer IV Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:



  • Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in scientific programming or computational science, preferably in a federal agency setting.
  • Strong understanding of scientific principles and advanced mathematics, with expertise in differential equations, numerical analysis, and computational methods.
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in scientific computing, such as Python, MATLAB, or Fortran.
  • Experience with symbolic computing tools, such as Mathematica or Maple, is desirable.
  • Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular scientific or technical field.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop innovative computational solutions to complex problems.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous experience leading or directing the work of others is desirable.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.
