JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

This position assists the Flower Trials Director with aspects of the Penn State Flower Trials as needed.

Duties to include:

  • crop monitoring-scouting for insects and diseases
  • pH and EC (electrical conductivity) measurements taken regularly both in the greenhouse and in the field
  • collection of research data as assigned
  • assisting with photography of the trials (over 5000 photos collected annually)
  • assist with coordination of volunteers who work on aspects of trials maintenance (deadheading, weeding, mulching, etc)
  • other maintenance duties for the trials area

Data collected on research will then require data entry on aspects of research conducted using google drive and SPSS. The position will also be involved with events held at SEAREC (Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center) concerning the PSU Flower Trials.

Interns may be called upon to assist with set up and tear down of the events, as well as possibly manning an informational station. Interns will assist with the PSU Flower Trials Container Contest: including container check in recordkeeping and assisting with judging.

During the growing season (May 15-Sep 20) interns will be called upon to assist with the general maintenance of the flower trials. Supplemental academic training in horticulture will be provided throughout the season by lecture, demonstration, discussion, Lunch and Learn programs, and possibly field trips. Interns are encouraged to study and test for their PA Pesticide applicator's license. Interns will gain in depth knowledge of annual and perennial plants being tested in the program.
