JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology, in Hershey, PA is seeking a Research Technologist - Medical Sciences - Advanced Professional. This position will study mitochondrial cell death mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases is immediately available in the Mnatsakanyan lab at the Penn State University College of Medicine. The candidate will work on an integrated research project combining structural (cryo-electron microscopy and tomography) and electrophysiology (patch-clamp and planar lipid bilayer recordings) approaches to study the neuronal death pathways in Alzheimer's disease. The candidate will have the opportunity to participate in wet-lab experiments to isolate mitochondria from different tissues, purify protein from different hosts, isolate primary neuronal cultures from animals. The candidate will also be involved in mitochondrial ion channel studies using electrophysiology and microscopy techniques. Other responsibilities include ordering lab supplies and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. Qualified candidates should have a bachelor's or master's degree in chemistry, biology, physics, or related areas. The preference will be given to applicants with prior research experience with animal models or expertise in protein biochemistry/biophysics studies. This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher (Master's degree preferred) plus 7 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This is a limited-term position funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of refunding. The following clearances must be successfully completed for this position:
