Overview

A Neonatal Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse with at least 2 years of experience as a beside registered nurse in a level III NICU, who is prepared to practice across the continuum, providing primary, acute, chronic, and critical care to neonates, infants, and toddlers through age 2.


Responsibilities

  • Performs physical examinations, may perform specialty procedures and provide follow up care of the patient.
  • Performs preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines and instructions of the physician.
  • Explains and provides specialized education to the patient care.
  • Provides answers to any questions a patient might have.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs.
  • Records physical findings, and formulates plan and prognosis, based on patient's condition.
  • Credentialed to sedate, circulate and scrub electrophysiology procedures under the direction of the physician, as needed by specialty clinic.
  • Discusses and collaborates care of the patient with Physician and other health professionals to prepare comprehensive patient care plan.
  • Submits health care plan and goals of individual patients for periodic review and evaluation by physician.
  • Prescribes or recommends drugs or other forms of treatment such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures.
  • Has a high level of decision-making skills and autonomy.
  • Refers patients to Physician for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment.

Education and Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Meets the requirements determined by the State of Wisconsin or Illinois to perform duties defined as those of a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Specialty, based on area of practice, experience required

Certification/Licensure

  • Holds valid APNP license in state of practice
  • Hold valid state RN license in state of practice
  • Has DEA authorization as needed
  • Approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days. Other Certifications per unit requirements: ACLS, PALS, PEARS, NRP
