Role Purpose

In this role the Composting Program Manager will serve the needs of a dedicated large-scale municipal school district "the Client" which distributes over 250,000 meals each day and is comprised of over 320,000 Pre-Kindergarten to twelfth grade students in 651 schools. The Composting Program Manager will report to JLL's Senior Director, Waste Center of Excellence for the U.S. based team within Sustainable Operations Division of JLL Work Dynamics with a dotted line to the Lead Project Manager. This role will oversee the initial development, design and implementation of a comprehensive, community-centered food waste composting plan that will benefit and protect underserved and minority communities.

What this job involves:

Key responsibilities include:
Develop and execute a large-scale composting program roadmap based gathered data and metrics, which will outline initial findings, goals, and recommendations for implementation of a district-wide composting plan.
Drafting of associated policy documentation that will guide the successful implementation of a composting plan that accurately assesses community needs and requires extensive research, analysis, and communication.
Lead various stakeholder data gathering activities, including but not limited to focus groups and interviews.
Develop high-quality staff, student and community training and education materials and execution of associated advisory and training activities.
Develop a program management plan that will serve as the primary guide for ongoing maintenance of the program.
Play a lead role in fostering purpose-driven collaborations with key program stakeholders that centers around the shared goal of reducing food waste across a large municipal school district that exists primarily within underserved communities at the consumer, food purchasing, and preparation levels.
Develop, utilize and maintain appropriate systems for ongoing data tracking, analysis, performance management, and reporting.

Requirements - Essential
University degree, demonstrating subject matter expertise (e.g., Sustainability related degree; Environmental Engineer, Urban Planning, etc.); LEED accreditation preferred.
Technical understanding of commercial and industrial food composing systems and infrastructure, waste management, and food scrap collections.
Experience developing and implementing large-scale food waste composting and/or other complex landfill diversion programs.
Experience and comfort engaging and leading communications across a wide spectrum of key stakeholder groups such as City Leadership and Administration, School Administrators, Community Leaders, Corporate Leaders, Consultants, Research Partners, NGOs, and vendors partners such as Commercial Kitchen Operators, Waste Haulers and Composting Facility Operators.
In-depth understanding of key concepts such as the EPA Food Waste Hierarchy, Composting, Environmental Justice, Social Equity, Sustainability, Circular Economy, Waste Diversion, Waste Prevention, Community Impact, and ESG.
Experienced with benchmarking and analysing complex data sets to drive sustainability measures.
Demonstrated history in drafting of complex policy documentation and benchmarking and impact reporting.
Ability to lead, collaborate with and influence large audiences with diverse backgrounds.
Passion and drive for problem-solving complex sustainability issues primarily centered around food waste prevention.
Strong project management skills and an ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a high pressure, deadline driven environment.
Proficiency with MS office suite, especially MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint and MS Excel.
Strong data management experience, including experience and comfortability in developing and presenting consolidated reports to diverse audience, from operations to C-suite.
Passionate about working towards a sustainable future.
Demonstrated experience in influencing cross-functional teams.
Excellent ability to build relationships.
Proven project management experience and excellent communication skills
Attention to detail and accuracy in written and numeric work.
Ability to obtain buy-in and active engagement with stakeholders at all levels.
Demonstrated experience with change management across multi-faceted situations and cross-functional teams; change management certification is desirable.

Requirements - Desirable
Experienced with large-scale sustainability initiatives in underserved and minority communities, preferably specific to municipal educational K-12 settings.
Ability to speak/communicate in Spanish.
Experience in the preparation of project financing documents, grant funding documents, and community outreach communications,
Knowledge of environmental reporting and waste diversion/landfill diversion reporting.
Experience engaging with various layers of municipal education systems, including but not limited to school administrators, staff, students, and other community members.
Experiencing conducting or leading waste audits.
Knowledge of concepts including but not limited to urban planning, community gardens, soil enrichment, local food donation programs, Share Tables research, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Food Waste Warriors Program, and National Sciences Foundation (NSF) funded RECIPIES Research.
TRUE Zero Waste certification or other similar accreditation/certifications strongly preferred.
Knowledge of CDP, GRI, SASB, UNSDGs and general ESG reporting.

This position is remote, but candidates must be located within the Chicago, Illinois metro area.

While remote, this position may require on-site presence at least 2 to 3 days per week

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a virtual environment that requires the role to maintain typical office hours related to the business and workgroup assigned.
Requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Work Schedules:
Most staff work full time, M-F based on account needs.

Required Travel:
Travel to client locations is a requirement for this position. On site activities can include but are not limited to; client meetings, training, audits, and vendor support. Travel will approximately be 30%.
