Carnegie Mellon University's department of Facilities Management is searching for a Laborer I to join our team!

At Carnegie Mellon University, Facilities Management and Campus Services (FMCS) defines our core activities through stewardship of university facilities and happiness of our customers. In order to carry out these strategic and meaningful activities, we focus on the areas of technological enhancement, process improvement, quality assurance, and collaboration.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct assistance to craftsperson's in various crafts including plumbers, pipefitters, A/C mechanics, carpenters, electricians, painters and masons.
  • Perform work of a semi-skilled nature in a variety of maintenance and construction trades.
  • Operate on and off-road utility vehicles and light trucks in support of assigned work.
  • Requisition job parts and supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You Must Demonstrate:

  • Ability to identify and effectively use hand tools including hammers, screwdrivers and wrenches. Basic knowledge of electricity and mechanical principles.
  • Ability to move and work in confined spaces, up and down ladders and to work from ladders and scaffolding. Travel to jobs over a 100+ acre campus with many hills and stairs. Ability to lift 40 pounds from ground to overhead.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to perform clearly defined tasks with minimal direction; Ability to professionally manage interactions with challenging customers.
  • Ability to work independently and make appropriate decisions as to when additional help is needed to correct issues.
  • Available to work first, second, or third shift.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Required Experience:
    • Two (2) years of full-time experience relevant to the role, with one year in journey-level experience in electrical, plumbing, HVAC or structural trades required.
  • Preferred Experience:
    • Maintenance experience in an institutional (college, university, hospital, etc.) setting preferred.
    • Formal training in electrical/mechanical/structural systems preferred.
    • Other craft licenses or certifications (e.g. electrician, plumber, operating engineer) preferred.

Requirements:

  • Successful Background Check
  • Valid PA Driver's License
  • Motor Vehicle Records (conducted annually)
  • Fitness for duty assessment and pre-employment medical exam
  • Pre-Employment Drug and Alcohol Screen
  • PA Child Protection Clearances (Act 153)

Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), non-exempt position based in Pittsburgh, PA.
  • This position will require flexibility in working various shifts, overtime and call-out work.
  • The Laborer must be able to work outside during inclement conditions and with sanitary waste in a safe and effective manner.
  • Sponsorship: Applicantsfor this positionmust becurrentlylegally authorized to workfor CMUin the United States. CMU will notsponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity
  • Must be a member of, or agree to join Local #95 International Union of Operating Engineers bargaining unit.
