The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses varied disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department's mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world. |
Essential Job Duties |
Primary responsibility for this position is to assist the Small Grains and Variety Testing programs with seed management throughout the process of receiving, planting, harvesting, and grain analysis. Planning and implementation of the seed program will involve interactions with the growers associations, producers, extension specialists, research faculty, county extension agents, and industry representatives in the NC Agricultural community.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Process seed samples as they enter the program for testing, counting, labeling, and organizing.
- Prepare seeds for planting, and manage harvested seed samples when they return from the field.
- Manage seed sample flow for the lab which will include operating a Perten 9500 NIR, Perten falling Number 1500, and a DON analyzer.
- Effectively utilize off-season and periods when seed management and processing are slow to develop extension materials for use at field days and other small grains educational events.
Travel is required including occasional overnight and weekend travel. |
Other Responsibilities |
- Assist in grant development and co-authoring publications as appropriate to individual projects.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's degree in Crop Science, Plant Science, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Environmental Science, or related field.
- At least three years of relevant experience.

- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently on defined tasks and with others in a team setting

Preferred Qualifications |
- Master's degree in Crop Science, Plant Science, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Environmental Science, or related field.
- Experience with small grains.
- Experience developing extension materials or giving extension presentations.
- 2 years experience in seed processing, seed quality analysis, or any job where seed management is a large part of the duties
