Position Summary

The Department of Spanish and
Portuguese at the University of New Mexico is seeking qualified temporary part
time faculty members to teach undergraduate level classes in Spanish and/or Portuguese
as specified below.

Instructors are responsible for all aspects of any class
they are teaching including but not limited to meeting with the class during
assigned times, content delivery, assignment development, grading assignments,
reporting of grades, and assessment of student learning as outlined by the
Chair of the department.

Positions are contingent upon need
each semester as determined by student enrollment levels, current course
offering matrix, and demand driven by graduation requirements. Positions
may be filled or eliminated each semester up to the deadline for students to
drop or add courses. Candidates who are selected for these positions will
report to the Chair of the department, Dr. Santiago R. Vaquera-Vasquez.

Spring 2024 semester - November 15, 2023
Summer 2024 semester - March 15, 2024


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
To teach courses as described above
are determined by Higher Learning Commission's accreditation requirements for
faculty, and must be met by one of these ways:

  1. Master's Degree or higher in either Spanish; Peninsular Literature; Latin American Literature; Hispanic Southwest Literature and Culture; Portuguese; Brazilian Literature; Romance Languages and Literatures for which you are applying.
    Or
  2. Successful completion of at least 18 graduate credit hours in an accredited program in the discipline or subfield for which you are applying (i.e. BA or BS degree for example).

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Two years professional experience in the specialization or subfield
2. An earned doctorate from an accredited institution
3. Successful teaching experience in a post-secondary institution
4. Successful experience teaching courses using a variety of teaching modalities (such as Face-to-Face, Remote, and Fully Online)
5. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
6. Evidence of expertise in one or more of the following areas, which represent current departmental strengths: Portuguese for Spanish Speakers Pedagogy, Latin American Literary and Cultural Studies, Cultural Geography, Migration and Immigration, Human Rights, Race and Ethnicity, Interdisciplinary Studies, Program Coordination and Development, Community-Engaged Pedagogies.
7. Evidence of Native or near-native fluency and ability to teach in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.
