MedStar Harbor Hospital Psychiatric Director of Nursing (DON) Role Overview



  • Lead and manage nursing and patient care services for the adult inpatient and psychiatric crisis stabilization unit
  • Oversee a team of 90+ professionals including Psychiatric RNs, Psychiatric -Counselors, PCTs, Unit Secretaries and a Recreation Therapist
  • Develop and implement initiatives to enhance patient care, including the establishment of an ECT program
  • Expand recruitment efforts to hire additional PCTs to support unit operations
  • Foster a positive and supportive unit culture focused on excellence and compassion
  • Functions as a unit manager
  • Is supported by an Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)


Minimum Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a Nationally accredited program required; Master's degree in Nursing or health related field from a Nationally accredited program preferred
  • 4 years of nursing experience required; 5+ years of management and leadership experience strongly preferred, particularly in an inpatient psychiatric environment
  • RN-Registered Nurse-State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure required upon hire; specialty certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization in either a clinical specialty or Nursing Administration preferred or must be obtained within two years of hire; BLS-Basic Life Support for healthcare professionals required upon hire

  • Ability to take up to 10-patients, including adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients
  • Provide therapeutic milieu and treatment until patients are appropriately dispositioned
