Summary: Echo Techs perform all cardiac ultrasound (echocardiograms); Produce images of the heart to show hemodynamics and function via cardiac ultrasound. Cardiac images are digitally acquired, and measurements obtained by our Echo Techs. They ensure patient safety through use of procedure protocols and policies.

Requirement:

  • High school diploma or GED is required
  • Graduate of a two (2) year Allied Health Training Program, Ultrasound Technology preferred
  • Bachelors program in health science (including, but not limited to, cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, or nursing) or graduate of an accredited program in cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) preferred
  • 0-4 years experience inpatient/outpatient cardiac ultrasound.
  • New Mexico State Licensure under the New Mexico Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Program (NMRTT)
  • Current BLS required.
  • Required: Required: ARDMS/RDCS credential with one of the following specialties: AE, FE, PE; or one CCI credential: RCS, RCCS Certs: BLS, NMRTT


Education Essential:

  • High School Diploma or GED


Credentials Essential:

  • NM Radiation Therapy


Responsibilities:

  • Performs all routine echocardiograms independently for evaluation of possible abnormal heart defects or disease (inpatient or outpatient).
  • Learn to perform Stress echocardiogram and Dobutamine stress echocardiograms with mentor. Progress to be more independent with these modalities.
  • Requires knowledge of cardiac anatomy, pathophysiology and principles of ultrasound.
  • Applying independent judgement during the exam to determine the need to for any additional imaging enhancement or bubble study.
  • Demonstrates basic clinical knowledge and judgement to manage the patient during the exam. Continue to develop critical thinking skills with the ability to recognize, analyze and resolve problems to ensure completion of performed exam.
  • Accurately completes charges for all exams performed in the EHR system as well as initiate and assign the preliminary report in PACS.
  • Submit required studies for IAC case review, working with mentor on case requirements.
  • Keeps current with developments in the field through participation in seminars, workshops and publications.
  • Available for call on a monthly rotational basis.
  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infections disease, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist in machine malfunctions by calling service and alerting the lead techs.
  • Maintains and documents communications with physician and nursing units regarding test results.
  • Communicate with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient's ability to understand.
  • Function as a team member to organize and prioritize responsibilities to complete daily work requirements.
  • Consults with and keep lead techs informed of activities, needs and problems in assigned areas
  • Maintain requirements for hospital/departmental and specialty area(s) competencies.
  • Participates in and endorses the established PHS Policies and Procedures and guest relations programs.
  • Knowledge in Joint Commission regulations pertaining to the lab.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the practice of echocardiography.
  • Performs other duties and functions as required.
