Job Summary

The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is currently seeking a Medical Assistant to join our Team of Professionals

Duties:

  • Answers phones, receives and dispositions patient calls, registers patients for visits, and schedules appointments. Performs basic accounting and recordkeeping procedures relating to copayment and other patient responsibility collection at the time of service.
  • Performs phlebotomy and collection of laboratory specimens. Performs basic in-office lab tests. Maintains operator proficiencies in performing referenced lab testing. Maintains accurate logs and other laboratory record keeping. Reports critical lab value results to provider(s).
  • Performs searches of previous patient prescription history on the Florida Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (E- FORCSE), according to protocol and provides information to designated providers.
  • Administers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatments under the direct supervision of a psychiatrist, according to designated protocols. Monitors patients during the treatment sessions and documents accordingly.
  • Works with and/or in an environment with minors and/or vulnerable persons that seek care at the practice.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
  • Measures and records vital signs. Provides patient interview, medical history and chief complaint. Records history and physical findings. Provides patient education with regards to office policies, medications, management of disease, home care, and minor office surgery/procedures.
  • Performs computer skills in transcription, patient scheduling, insurance claims, and data entry. Documents in the electronic medical record.
  • Prepares patients for examinations including providing the patient an explanation of any procedures to be performed. Assists provider during examinations, procedures, and routine screening tests.
  • Performs EKGs and administer treatments/procedures such as nebulizer, ear lavage and other routine procedures. Performs dressings and apply bandages. Prepares and administers medications and immunizations with provider order.
  • Arranges for hospital admissions, requests for consultations and outside referrals to physician and ancillary providers. Assists with gaining authorizations/pre-certifications as requested.
  • Sterilizes instruments. Maintains patient areas in a clean and safe manner. Practices Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and safety standards.
  • Works in a multidisciplinary team environment that fosters effective communication and care coordination while supporting a positive experience for every patient.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.
CPR/Standard First Aid Certification
Graduate of an accredited medical program (e.g., MA, CNA, CCMA, EMT, LPN)

Desired Qualifications

Physically capable of assisting/lifting patients on/off exam tables, stretchers, and capable of pushing wheelchair or stretcher.
Prior experience documenting in an electronic medical record.
Bilingual in English and Spanish
