Overview

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly skilled and strategic Director of Competitive Intelligence to lead the company's efforts in gathering, analyzing, and disseminating competitive insights across the entire value chain. The ideal candidate will be responsible for synthesizing a variety of information sources and providing the organization with clear, actionable insights that will inform strategic decision-making from new product planning to products nearing the end of their lifecycle. This role will require a dynamic leader who can manage multiple vendors, leverage self-service tools, and work closely with both executives and operational teams to drive the competitive intelligence function forward.

This position is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Competitive Analysis: Lead the competitive intelligence function by synthesizing data from various sources, including primary and secondary research, to deliver clear, actionable insights that drive business decisions across the value chain.
  • Value Chain Focus: Provide intelligence that supports strategic planning across all product lifecycle stages, from early development and new product planning to lifecycle management and end-of-life strategies.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with executives, product teams, R&D, commercial operations, and other key stakeholders to ensure that competitive insights are integrated into decision-making processes. Act as a strategic partner to leaders across the organization.
  • Partnership to the Business Units: understand the CI needs from the BUs related to the commercial products, and collaboratively identify approaches to address these needs. Ensure appropriate dissemination channels and activities for the CI updates in partnership with the Strategy and operations leads.
  • Vendor Oversight and Partnership: Oversee and manage multiple vendors providing competitive intelligence services. Ensure that all external partners deliver high-quality, timely, and relevant data and insights.
  • Self-Service Tools Management: Implement and manage self-service competitive intelligence tools that empower internal stakeholders to independently access and utilize competitive insights. Train and support teams in the effective use of these tools.
  • Strategic Simulation and Scenario Planning: Coordinate and facilitate interactive strategic exercises and scenario analyses to evaluate potential competitor actions and market developments, enabling the organization to anticipate challenges and seize opportunities effectively
  • Insight Communication: Develop and deliver compelling presentations, reports, and dashboards that clearly communicate competitive insights and strategic recommendations to senior leadership and other key stakeholders.
  • Market Monitoring: Continuously monitor the competitive landscape, including tracking competitor activities, market trends, regulatory developments, and technological advancements that could impact Alnylam's business.
  • Risk and Opportunity Identification: Identify potential risks and opportunities in the competitive environment and provide strategic recommendations to mitigate risks or capitalize on opportunities.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and enhance the competitive intelligence processes, methodologies, and tools to ensure they meet the evolving needs of the organization.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's required, with an Advanced degree (MBA, PhD, or equivalent) in Business, Life Sciences, or related field strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in competitive intelligence, market research, or strategic planning within the biopharmaceutical industry.
  • Proven track record of providing actionable insights that have influenced business strategy.
  • Experience managing external vendors and implementing self-service intelligence tools.
  • Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills with the ability to synthesize complex data into clear insights.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence and engage senior executives.
  • Proficiency in using competitive intelligence tools and software.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and vendors simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with the ability to inspire and guide cross-functional teams towards a common goal.
