POSITION PURPOSE Provide electrical and controls engineering support and project management for both capital and operations and maintenance projects at Madison Gas and Electric Company's (MGE) power generation facilities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinates with internal and external entities to acquire project scope, schedule, and budget information during project development through project implementation.
- Develops and performs tests designed to acquire data on power plant equipment. Analyzes test results, submits reports detailing the results, and makes recommendations for internal review and approval.
- Identifies the need for upgrades and improvements to plan electrical and process control systems, applications, and network Digital Control System devices.
- Provides engineering support and project management necessary for completion of capital projects, including project development, technology research, cost estimation, scope identification, bid evaluation, contractor coordination, documentation control, and equipment commissioning.
- Provides troubleshooting skills and techniques needed to assess, pinpoint, and correct operating problems encountered with plant equipment as well as technical support required to resolve equipment maintenance problems.
- Communicates and coordinates effectively with Information Technology (IT) (e.g., IT Technical Services, Security, Databases, and Applications) as needed for new control devices, replacements of obsolete devices, hardware lease replacements, software licensing, software patching, and version control of existing device software.
- Conducts studies and tests on process controls equipment, including commissioning, tuning, and testing of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) functional logic and Human Machine Interface (HMI) screen functionality.
- Coordinates training of Energy Production personnel on new control systems and electrical equipment.
- Leads/assists in root cause analysis of plant component failures.
- Assists as assigned in power generation facility regulatory compliance tasks.
- Locates, maintains, and updates documents which include drawings, manuals, and instructions.
- Maintains and improves documentation control and change management standards for process control systems, applications, and network control devices.
QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited four-year university.
- Valid driver's license.
- Experience in reading, interpreting, and developing electric drawings and schematics.
- Prefer 3+ years of experience with utility electrical and controls systems.
- Attends classes and seminars to learn new and existing technologies used in the power plant and utility industry.
- Keeps current with appropriate construction and safety codes, governmental codes such North American Electric Reliability Corporation reliability standards, and Company rules and regulations.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of electrical engineering principles with an understanding of high-, medium-, and low-voltage systems.
- Understanding of boilers, turbines, generators, electric motors, and variable frequency drive systems.
- Organizational and time management skills to plan, organize, and manage multiple projects simultaneously, effectively, and efficiently.
- Familiar with PLCs, HMI software, and network devices such as servers, switches, routers, hubs, fiber-optics, firewalls, etc.
