Description

To provide custodial and maintenance support, in a safe, efficient and attractive manner in and around facilities occupied by SIU School of Medicine. Employees at this level perform custodial work required in the routine cleaning and upkeep of all campus buildings, and/or multiple areas in campus buildings that are covered by Facilities and Services. They work under the direct supervision from the Building Services Supervisor. This is a group leadership position. Employees at this level assign and control the performance of building service tasks. They are responsible for the work of all lower level Building Service personnel cleaning university buildings on the specific shift and area assigned.


Examples of Duties

25% Assigns and controls the work areas and tasks of building service employees, inspects work of assigned personnel and directs corrective measures to secure satisfactory performance and meet established standards, evaluates job assignments and prepares reports.
25% Assist the Building Services Supervisor evaluate situations to determine corrective
measures, best practice that will achieve & maintain satisfactory performance and results. Collect & submit time & operating data, with responsibility for providing requested recommendations.
This position can initiate and implement disciplinary actions as needed in the absence of the Building Service Supervisor or at the direction of the Supervisor or Deputy Director of Operations. This position will also assist the SIU SOM Facilities Management with policy and procedure changes.
15% Train employees in established and specialized methods in the use of equipment, and techniques of building maintenance, cleaning and sanitation.
15% Perform building service tasks of lower level employees in this series, as assigned or required, including daily restroom maintenance, mopping, sweeping, floor scrubbing, cleaning of carpets & furniture, trash disposal & recyclable collection.
5% Acts for the supervisor during his absence, assists the supervisor in the assignment a
direction of work. Performs other related duties as assigned, and outside of area assigned as needed.
5% Obtain, distribute, and be held responsible for the security of operating supplies & equipment for assigned area. Make minor repairs as able & report observed needs to repair buildings & equipment.
5%Participate in SIU-SOM, State and Federal mandated training and respond/act responsibly in compliance with regulatory training. This includes, but not limited to:
a) Required to complete annual training for Bloodborne Pathogens and Hazards Communication, indicating with a test score of 80% or greater.
b) Complete required safety training (i.e. Prevention of Slips, Trips, and Falls and Back Safety etc.) and incorporate learned safety skills into functional daily work activities.
c) Report observed leaks, spills, or other releases of potentially hazardous materials to Supervisor, Director of Facilities and Operations, EHSO, or local emergency responders, depending on extent and nature of release. Assist SIU-SOM oil handling personnel to restrict unauthorized access to the impacted areas and inhibit the spread of the release by applying absorbent materials as appropriate and commensurate with training.
d) Demonstrate general knowledge of the school's Spill Prevention and Countermeasure Plan and attend yearly training on plan contents.
5% Miscellaneous. Assist building maintenance and security personnel in emergencies i.e. floods, emergence evacuations. Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

1. High School graduation or equivalent.

2. Three (3) years of experience in building custodial work.
