UC Berkeley Youth Recreation leads the way in providing summer camps, programs, and clinics for youth of all ages. Located on the UC Berkeley campus for more than 60 years, we offer high-caliber, impactful, and enriching camps and programs.

Responsibilities

Youth Basketball Instructors provide instruction and support to enrolled recreational youth participants as assigned in a clinical athletic setting. Youth Basketball Instructors are further responsible for developing lesson plans that challenge specific skills or parts of the game, providing feedback to youth participants, using quantifiable methods to chart progress, and supporting the upkeep of the recreational facilities and spaces in support of providing a safe and nurturing environment. Other program-related tasks may be assigned as needed or appropriate.

I. GENERAL SUPERVISION

  • Provide general supervision, risk management, and downtime activities for participants.
  • Develop age-appropriate relationships with participants and identify and meet individual participants' needs.
  • Help participants leave their comfort zones and take healthy risks while improving basketball skills, social skills, and sportsmanship.
  • Account for all participants, take attendance regularly, and follow safe transition period procedures.
  • Supervise participants on water/bathroom breaks.
  • Assist participants with their belongings, lost and found, water, trash pick-up, etc.
  • Assist and guide participants in resolving their own problems and step in only when necessary.
  • Motivate participants and co-instructors to enthusiastically participate in all activities.

II. PROGRAM INSTRUCTION & FACILITATION

  • Teach age-appropriate basketball skills, drills, and activities in a progressive sequence and/or assist with leading activities as assigned by the supervisors.
  • Plan progressive lessons with any co-instructors based on participants' ages and skill levels.
  • Run organized and well-executed sessions where there is maximum opportunity for progression and participation in a diverse range of games and drills.
  • Actively participate and engage with all participants.
  • Connect the program values and life skills to the activities in a developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Routinely adjust difficulty drills and games to accommodate the progressing skill level of all participants.

III. ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Submit Incident/Accident reports to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Assist camp staff with submitting paperwork accurately and on time (Caltime/manual timesheets, required compliance training certifications, university policies, etc.).
  • Maintain excellent and clear communication with Camp Leads and Coordinators to make sure all communication/decision-making is unilateral, and to avoid conflicting correspondence with parents.

IV. MISCELLANEOUS

  • Interact with recreational program participants in a positive manner.
  • Assist with assigned check-in and check-out procedures.
  • Promote practices and traditions to help participants and co-instructors feel united as a group.
  • Help all participants make friends and enjoy the program experience.
  • Look for ways to make the program better and share them with your assigned supervisor.
  • Complete and submit paperwork accurately (onboarding documents, required training, timesheets, lesson plans, certifications, evaluations, etc.).
  • Accept feedback from supervisors and make necessary corrections.
  • Conduct daily checks of the gymnasium and/or program area for safety and cleanliness; make needed improvements or report needs to a supervisor or appropriate maintenance member.
  • Assist with, lead, and/or participate in all special events, staff meetings, and programs designated by your supervisor.
  • Maintain a supportive environment for all youth and facilitate participant involvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of program activity practices and procedures.
  • Verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, critical thinking, multi-tasking, time management skills, and dynamic flexibility in adapting to the needs of clients.
  • Ability to exercise independent sound judgment and employ reasoning skills.
  • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
  • Basic skills in computer programs relevant to job duties.
  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certification to instruct in the applicable recreational sports program or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Standard First Aid Training Certification preferred.

Salary & Benefits

This is an 8-month, part-time (12 hours/week), contract appointment, not eligible for UC benefits. This is a non-exempt, hourly paid position.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $20.00 - $24.00.
