Position Summary:

Performs complex technical analysis of cancer patient data. Assumes direct responsibility for accuracy, completeness, and data entry of information collected. In compliance with JHMI, the American College of Surgeons, and the State of Maryland, analyzes and interprets all available patient data to determine extensive coding classifications including ICD-O. Determines selection, evaluation and analysis of diagnosis in order to satisfy criteria for entry into cancer data base. Maintains all information to obtain annual follow-up on patients entered into cancer data base for purposes of patient care management, research, epidemiological studies, state, and national data submission. Performs other assigned projects.

Competencies:

Education:





  • Required: Associate degree or 4 years of experience



  • Required: Certification in respective registry of hire, if applicable



  • Required: Coursework of 2 semesters of 'Human Anatomy & Physiology' or equivalent





Work Experience:




  • Minimum of 1-year of related experience in medical field required



Required Licensure, Certification, etc.:




  • National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR), American Trauma Society (ATS), or Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR)



Knowledge:





  • Knowledge of procedures and biomedical products related to assigned registry



  • Data management systems and expertise with clinical data analysis and reporting



  • Data abstraction from electron medical records



  • Data mining, statistics and dashboard reporting



  • MS Access, MS Excel, MS Word and PowerPoint.





Skills:





  • Must be comfortable with, but not limited to: Excel, web-browsers, email, electronic health records


  • Must be familiar with various technologies such as, but not limited to: security (e.g., Citrix), data collection/abstraction, encoders, web-based applications
  • Strong interpersonal skills and tactfulness to be able to effectively communicate with team members and client contacts

  • Preferred up-to-date understanding or experience with clinical registries and research.



  • Flexibility and the ability to work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment



  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed.



  • Ability to work under pressure to meet submission, project and reporting deadlines.


  • Ability to work in a fast-paced university teaching hospital.



Budget Responsibility:




  • Effective use of resources within control.



Authority/Decision Making Level:





  • Makes decisions regarding work processes based upon established guidelines.



  • Organizes and prioritizes work to meet changing priorities.

    Supervisory Responsibility: None. Acts as a resource and mentor for Registrar I, II

  • Analytic ability is required in order to gather and interpret data from different sources, identify/resolve problems, and report results effectively.

  • Must be able to maintain patient confidentiality

    Working Conditions:





  • Works in a normal office environment.



  • Working conditions primarily remote but at discretion of leadership



  • Position requires 90% of time spent at a designated station using PC and telephone.



  • High level of fatigue





Physical Requirements:





  • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period and bend at the waist, twist.



  • Finger dexterity is required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard
