Engineer Diver (Structural Focus) - Senior Level

We are actively seeking an experienced structural engineering professional with certifications in commercial diving at any of our SoCal offices including: Long Beach (preferred), Costa Mesa, Carlsbad, or San Diego, CA.

As the successful new hire, you will be working with a professional engineering inspection and rehabilitation design team that provides consulting services to clients - primarily in the Southern California area and Hawaii. Occasional travel to other areas throughout the U.S. and abroad will also be required. The principal function of this position is to be part of a team that evaluates marine structures through above and underwater engineering inspections, follow-on report preparation and development of structural repair or replacement designs. You will be responsible for client-facing activities with a prominent and highly regarded client in the SoCal region.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducts and/or supervises site investigations of waterfront infrastructure such as marine structures, marinas, ports, container terminals, water control structures, etc.
  • Manages projects and staff so that scopes of work are fulfilled and that contracted deliverables are submitted on schedule and within budget
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the inspection teams, design teams, and other engineering disciplines
  • Analyzes aged or damaged components of marine structures to assess repairs, upgrades, and load capacity updates
  • Conducts cost-benefit analysis conversations with clients to assist with selection of preferred solutions
  • Performs inspections utilizing commercial diving methods and techniques while adhering to field operation standards and safety procedures
  • Actively assists in writing of technical reports and manuals as needed
  • Understands and maintains proficiency with State, Federal, and local agency design standards and criteria, practices, and policies
  • Prepares plans, specifications, cost estimates and supporting documentation
  • Functions independently performing technical design and ROM cost estimating tasks
  • Assists in business development activities such as proposals and cost estimates for the Inspection & Rehabilitation Discipline
  • Participates in long distance projects with travel and overnight stays as required
  • Performs other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Professional Engineer licensure required. License in California is desired within 12 months of hire
  • Certified Diver - ADCI, HSE, DCBC, IMCA or ADAS
  • 10 to 15+ years of structural assessment experience
  • Certified Dive Supervisor is preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must
  • Proven experience in performing above/below water engineering inspections
  • Possess a valid driver's license in good standing
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required. Most work is regional to SoCal; typical travel can be up to 1 to 2 weeks in duration
  • Boater Safety Card preferred
  • Ability to obtain security clearances required by the US Navy strongly preferred
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within a couple months of hire a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Current First Aid, CPR, AED, and Oxygen Administration certification preferred
  • Good planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Selected candidate must consent to and a pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Base salary range:

$122,000 to $163,000* based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting required qualifications in the job description. In addition to salary, Moffatt & Nichol also offers generous dive pay along with a personal equipment reimbursement program.

*Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the California market.

Working conditions:

The incumbent works in both the office and field:

  • Office work requires ongoing design work requiring focus
  • Field work requires diving in waters and exposure to extreme elements
  • Must be able to move among a variety of simultaneous priorities
  • Some extended days, evenings, and weekend work requirements

Physical requirements:

This role requires the incumbent to be in excellent physical condition:

  • ADCI (or equivalent) diving requires specific physical conditioning and strength
  • Field work requires incumbent to carry diving and inspection equipment over unpaved, rural, and unmarked terrain
  • The incumbent must be able to lift, carry, climb, and navigate in a small boat.
