DESCRIPTION

Housed within the Center for Research in Educational Equity, Assessment and Teaching Excellence (CREATE), the California Reading and Literature Project (CRLP) is a statewide subject matter program that provides transformative professional learning in Reading/Literacy. The CRLP's professional learning centers educators as learners and leaders to ensure that every CA student receives high-quality, rigorous, comprehensive literacy instruction that is responsive to their identities, assets, and needs. The CRLP establishes partnerships with schools and districts to provide TK-12 teachers with comprehensive, high-quality professional learning for teaching reading, subject literacy and academic language as well as advocates for better access to literacy instruction in TK-12 education by creating professional learning designed to deepen teachers' content knowledge and strengthen their classroom practice as they develop their capacity as leaders.

With general direction from The CRLP Statewide Office Executive Director and the CRLP Regional Office Site director, the Literacy Education Specialist works as the lead to collaboratively and creatively plan, develop, and deliver secondary professional development programs and instructional resources that support teaching excellence with a goal toward teacher and student success for the new CRLP Statewide Office Literati (HIGHLANDERS, NZINGA, CHISPAS) Project and the new CRLP Statewide Office and CRLP Regional Office Gear Up Project.

Responsibilities include: designing, delivering, and assessing secondary educational programs across disciplines that support scholarly, evidence- based teaching, and learner-centered, equity-focused curriculum design; providing individual and departmental consulting on teaching effectiveness; providing formative feedback on teaching practices, course materials, and CRLP Signature Literacy course design; researching and developing online teaching resources for the Literati and the Gear Up Institutes in the rural areas, school districts/sites for the Sacramento, Fresno, and Riverside, San Bernardino area; and providing leadership and support for The CRLP and the California Subject Matter Projects teaching and learning initiatives for secondary educators. The Education Specialist will also serve as the lead facilitator on the Gear Up and Secondary Literati project with the CRLP Statewide Office and CRLP Regional Office-related committees and projects.

  • Must be willing and able to travel.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a California K-12 teaching credential and have extensive elementary/primary/secondary classroom teaching experience.

  • Prior or current leadership experience in CA education system. Experience independently developing and/or leading professional learning, and prior experience as a credentialed classroom teacher.

  • Experience working with a broad range of education professionals. Extensive knowledge of the teaching profession. Ability to interpret education materials and the most current research regarding classroom practice and educational standards.

  • Experience with the principles of education research. Ability to discuss current research on the training and learning of reading and literacy and its relationship to the specific content area in literacy development.

  • Strong demonstrated experience in written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely inform and guide teachers, school district administrators, and other CRLP trainers in writing instruction.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience with practical and imaginative approaches to writing as it applies to program and curriculum development, rationale and evaluation in order to meet the professional needs of teachers, administrators and district employees.

  • Membership and participation in professional educational organizations.

  • Thorough knowledge of functional area and understands how work may impact other areas.

  • Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and strong presentation skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of organizational policies and procedures.

  • Thorough knowledge of delivering training programs and thorough knowledge of other areas of human resources.

  • Thorough knowledge of current training programs and trends.

  • Strong skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new training courses to meet organizational needs.

  • Thorough knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.

  • Strong skills in planning, resourcing and monitoring effective delivery of training.

  • Thorough knowledge of applying adult learning theories and education methodologies.

  • Thorough knowledge of training and development, performance management and workplace learning. Ability to apply knowledge to achieve successful organizational outcomes.

  • Expert knowledge and ability to facilitate professional development of CRLP Signature Programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a collaborative environment with other trainers to meet the professional development, project, and research objectives and needs of the CRLP.

  • Demonstrated ability to schedule, organize and prioritize workload to meet fluctuating course schedules, deadlines and timeframes. Ability to function calmly and effectively in a variety of environments.

  • Ability to represent the CRLP at local educational, community and professional organization meetings and conferences.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $69,500 - $123,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $33.29 - $59.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
