A HUB FOR THE EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCES
UCAR is a nonprofit consortium of more than 115 North American colleges and universities focused on research and training in the Earth system sciences. We are the experienced managers of the National Center for Atmospheric Research on behalf of the National Science Foundation. Founded in 1960 to fulfill this role, we are trusted administrators of the financial, human resources, facilities, and information technology functions that are essential to NCAR's success.
UCAR's community programs — from encouraging diverse students to pursue science careers, to providing online professional training, data delivery, and other valued services — extend and enhance the world-class research done at the national center. Our work promotes and accelerates access to these and other resources needed to push the boundaries of Earth system science. We bring together the Earth system science community to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, and share what we've learned. By connecting researchers and educators with each other, with cutting-edge resources, and with the private sector, we take research out of the lab into the real world for the benefit of society.
ETHICS + INTEGRITY
UPHOLDING OUR VALUES
At the core of our work at NCAR and UCAR are the values that underlie our institutional culture:
- scientific integrity
- a diverse and inclusive workforce
- collaboration and partnerships
- innovation and agility
- transparency and open access
- and fiscal accountability.
DIVERSITY + INCLUSION
We are committed to increasing our diversity and fostering a workplace culture where everyone feels welcome and supported.
Not just because it's the right thing to do (it is), but because we know that individuals from a broad range of backgrounds working together are better able to solve the toughest and most complex scientific challenges. Increasing and maintaining our diversity requires recruitment, development, and retention of individuals with different perspectives, experiences, and values.
CAREERS
Work that Means Something
Whether you're a scientist seeking to help solve the riddles of our complex Earth system, a computing guru hungry for greater challenges, an administrative support person yearning to contribute your experience, or you're just starting out on your career path, we think you'll like what you find at NCAR and UCAR.
Working at NCAR and UCAR goes far beyond just having a job to make ends meet. Our staff have the opportunity to follow their curiosity, continue to grow their skills, and perhaps most importantly, contribute to a mission that is perhaps more important now than ever before. NCAR and UCAR are dedicated to improving our understanding of the Earth system and transferring our knowledge and technology for the betterment of life on Earth. Our society is facing environmental challenges on a grand scale — from megafires and drought to extreme weather and solar storms. Our organization is positioned to help tackle these challenges by providing actionable information that can safeguard lives and livelihoods in the face of these potential disasters. We engage and enable research in Earth system science with and for society.
Every job at NCAR and UCAR helps contribute to this work, from maintaining our buildings to working on our computer models to handling payroll.
We value our employee’s commitment to our mission, and in return we are committed to the well-being of our employees. We are a family-friendly workplace that offers a comprehensive and competitive benefits package and we work hard to create a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and welcoming environment for everyone.
