Job Summary
Responsible for providing care for patients in a healthcare setting, such as a doctor's office, hospital, nursing home, or other healthcare facility. Works under the direction of surgeons and physicians.
Primary Responsibilities
- Greet patients and take them to exam or hospital room.
- Record medical histories.
- Record symptoms and problems.
- Provide advice and emotional support.
- Perform and interpret diagnostic tests.
- Give injections.
- Take blood and set up intravenous fluids.
- Operate medical machinery.
- Take vital signs, including blood pressure, respiration, and temperature.
- Answer patient's questions.
- Assist physician during surgical procedures.
- Administer treatment and medications.
- Give inoculations.
- Refer patients to specialists.
- Help with rehabilitation.
- Teach patients how to manage injuries and illness.
- Explain post-operative care.
- Recommend diet, nutrition, and exercise programs.
- Tell the public about warning signs and symptoms of disease.
- Run general health screenings.
- Establish or modify care plans.
- Check dosages of medicine.
- Help deliver babies.
- Consult with physicians and clinicians.
- Provide direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Help patients manage diabetes.
- Provide advice through electronic communications media such as videoconferencing, the Internet, or by telephone.
