Our Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at UC San Diego Health is part of our designated Level I Trauma Center, caring for nearly 3,000 Neuro, Ortho, Spine, and General Surgery patients each year. Our multidisciplinary team - including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and trauma techs - is united by a shared commitment to exceptional bedside care grounded in evidence-based practice.

This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a motivated nurse leader to drive clinical excellence, trauma resuscitation, staff development, quality improvement, and outstanding patient care experiences in one of the region's most advanced surgical critical care environments.

The Assistant Nurse Manager is involved in ensuring optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and/or provision of patient care delivery in the Surgical ICU and Trauma Resuscitation Suite. Promotes environment for a shared voice in nursing practice and exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes. Accountable for the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of patient care. Consults and collaborates with other health care professionals to coordinate the management of patient care. Serves as a resource to staff, physicians, students and others.

Supervises staff involved in providing clinical patient care. Assists in ensuring the quality of patient care delivery in a specific patient care area and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources. May assume full responsibility for the unit in delegated areas and in the absence of the manager.

• A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN).
• Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state of California.
• Current ART certification, or BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.
• Five (5+) or more years of related experience including three (3) years of recent inpatient acute care ICU and/or trauma RN experience.
• Charge nurse or other formal nursing leadership experience.
• Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a patient care unit.
• In-depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations and internal policies.
• Knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources matters and employee performance. Provides input to decision-makers on human resources matters.
• Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate levels of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
• Effective interpersonal skills for effective information exchange and problem-solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants and outside agencies.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner. Prepares and presents a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals
• Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in nursing units or departments.
• Demonstrated hospital management skills, with progressive expertise in patient care services.
• Knowledge to manage disaster incidents, and sentinel events and ability to problem solve with critical thinking skills

• MSN or relevant graduate degree.
• Relevant nursing certification (CCRN, NE-BC, etc.).
• Experience leading multidisciplinary team.
• Experience as a trauma resuscitation nurse.

• This position has both clinical and administrative duties.
• Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
