Now, we're entering a new phase of growth and are seeking a Maintenance Manual Writer to create, document, and support maintenance development of high-quality documentation for advanced defense and aviation systems maintenance manuals. In this role, you'll collaborate with engineers, program managers, and compliance teams to create high-quality manuals that support maintenance, repair, and operational readiness. The ideal candidate will have experience developing clear, accurate, and compliant technical documentation for complex mechanical or electronic systems, particularly in the unmanned aircraft (drone) or FAA-certified aviation domain.

What You'll Do


  • Develop and maintain maintenance manuals, troubleshooting guides, and repair procedures for aerospace or defense systems.
  • Translate engineering data, CAD models, and system specifications into clear, user-focused documentation.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet applicable FAA, MIL-STD, and ITAR/CUI standards.
  • Author and edit content in AsciiDoc, XML, or Markup, following structured authoring best practices.
  • Work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to validate technical accuracy and maintain document currency.
  • Manage version control, review cycles, and configuration management through GitLab, SharePoint, or similar systems.
  • Support document layout, illustrations, and schematics to improve usability and comprehension.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other subject matter experts to gather and verify information, ensuring documentation is accurate and comprehensive.
  • Ensure all documents meet established standards and guidelines, conduct reviews and updates as necessary.


Requirements


  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience creating or editing maintenance documentation for complex mechanical, electrical, or aerospace systems.
  • Strong understanding of structured authoring, technical illustration, and configuration management.
  • Proficiency with authoring tools such as Visual Studio Code, Arbortext, or FrameMaker.
  • Familiarity with FAA documentation standards, Part 107, or DoD technical data requirements.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills, with strong attention to technical accuracy and consistency.
  • Ability to collaborate in Agile or cross-functional engineering environments.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy in documentation, and editing skills.
  • Proven experience writing and maintaining technical documentation in AsciiDoc, XML, or Markdown formats.
  • Proficiency in Visual Studio Code, GitLab, and SharePoint.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills with attention to clarity, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Familiarity with Agile environments and configuration management tools such as JIRA.
  • Working knowledge of software, mechanical, or electrical systems in defense or aviation contexts.
  • Excellent written communication and organizational skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

Preferred


  • Experience developing documentation for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) or FAA-certified aircraft
  • Experience supporting DoD, Aerospace, or Defense contractor programs.
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings or working with controlled technical data in secure environments.
  • Experience working within MIL-STD-40051, MIL-STD-38784, and ITAR/CUI regulations.


Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about regularly throughout the day, and lift/carry up to 25 pounds. Must have manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment, including computers, printers, and phones. Must be physically capable of walking between the office and production areas and attending events or meetings off-site as needed.


Work Environment

This position typically operates in a standard office and manufacturing environment. This role requires the use of standard office equipment and may require occasional local travel to recruiting events. This position may have exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, and non-climate-controlled environments. May require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) depending on the environment. This is a fast-paced work environment that requires cross-departmental collaboration and both independent and team-based responsibilities. Standard work hours for this position are 8:30 am-5:00 pm CT with occasional overtime as operational needs demand.


ITAR Requirement

In compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), candidates must be U.S. Citizens, U.S. Permanent Residents (Green Card holders), or individuals granted asylee/refugee status as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
