POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Application Platforms team, a key component of the Hybrid Cloud and Infrastructure team, delivers essential platforms that form the foundation of UC San Diego's academic and business infrastructure services. This role plays a critical part in analyzing, designing, implementing, and maintaining the technology platforms that support the university's business services and operations.

The Platforms Engineer will design, manage, and optimize IT environments that spans both hybrid cloud and on-premises. This role works with various technologies, including cloud platforms, automation frameworks, DevOps tools, and enterprise data platforms, while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.

The Platforms Engineer will focus on strengthening security configurations, modernizing database environments, and developing automation scripts that streamline deployments and monitoring. The role will also play a key part in optimizing system performance and ensuring seamless integration of applications, infrastructure, and data platforms.

The Platforms Engineer partners with technical staff to design solutions that directly support the university's mission. The engineer will contribute to disaster recovery strategies, lead system upgrades, and implement scalable, secure solutions that meet evolving business needs.

Responsibilities:

* Collaborating with stakeholders to identify opportunities for process improvement, designing and implementing technical solutions, and ensuring that platforms are properly integrated and supported. Will apply technical expertise to evaluate business requirements, develop solutions, and implement enterprise technology platforms that meet the needs of the campus community. DevOps practices are leveraged to integrate development and operations, automate workflows and processes using scripting and automation tools, and maintain central configuration management to ensure consistency and efficiency across all environments.

* Close collaboration with senior engineers, management, and staff is necessary to deploy and manage Enterprise Systems and integrate various information systems. This includes implementing and configuring platforms to support Campus Enterprise Systems Renewal initiatives, migrating to multi-vendor cloud solutions and hybrid infrastructure systems, and integrating data from various Student and Business Applications across multiple systems and networks.

* Project management principles are applied to deliver complex projects, ensuring timely and within-budget completion. Scripting and automation are utilized to streamline deployments, reduce manual errors, and increase efficiency. Centralized configuration management ensures consistency and version control across all environments, and expert consultation is provided on software installations, configuration, maintenance, and documentation to ensure seamless operations within a large department. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as interface with technical, non-technical, and management personnel across departments and project boundaries is required, including presenting to management and collaborating with other UC San Diego departments and external partners to deploy services and technologies.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs. Experience with supporting enterprise systems such as VMWare, Microsoft IIS, Active Directory, backups, containerized applications into Kubernetes, and AWS workloads.

  • Broad knowledge of technology design, development, and implementation to support diverse business and operational needs. Experience supporting a variety of enterprise IT systems, including business applications, data and reporting platforms, time and attendance systems, customer relationship management (CRM) tools, and other department-specific solutions. Familiar with platform administration, user support, and troubleshooting across different platforms and technologies.

  • Strong understanding of platform-related issues and the actions required to improve or resolve performance concerns. Proficient in administering and supporting Microsoft and Linux server environments running a variety of business applications. Experienced in software installation, troubleshooting, security, scripting, version control, and automation tools. Skilled in configuration management using Group Policy and Nagios, with hands-on experience in system monitoring and performance tracking using Nagios to proactively detect and address infrastructure issues.

  • Strong knowledge of platform and application security principles, with the ability to identify, assess, and remediate vulnerabilities across various platforms. Skilled in applying security best practices, including patch management, access control, encryption, and configuration hardening to protect systems and data. Experienced in using vulnerability scanning tools and collaborating with security teams to ensure compliance with organizational and industry security standards. Demonstrated ability to proactively secure environments by implementing preventative measures and responding effectively to potential threats or incidents.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt technology and equipment to effectively meet user and business needs. Strong understanding of how system management actions impact other systems, users, and interconnected functions. Experienced in performing complex integration tasks across various endpoints, including databases, application servers, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) systems, and SaaS solutions. Background in DevOps practices, working closely with developers to deploy applications through Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines such as Bamboo. Collaborates with database administrators to integrate systems and applications, ensuring reliable and secure data delivery across networks and platforms.

  • Ability to manage tasks and projects from initiation through completion, ensuring alignment with timelines, scope, and objectives. Experienced in working closely with service owners to gather requirements, define deliverables, and provide ongoing feedback throughout the project lifecycle. Skilled in coordinating internal resources, tracking progress, and adjusting plans as needed to meet evolving needs.

  • Broad knowledge of various areas of IT. Knowledge across multiple areas of IT, with a strong understanding of platform-related issues and the steps necessary to improve performance or resolve technical problems. Proficient in administering and supporting both Microsoft and Linux server environments running a variety of business applications. Advanced experience in software installation, troubleshooting, system security, scripting, version control, and the use of automation tools to streamline operational tasks.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $88,000 - $161,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $42.15 - $77.39

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
