POSITION SUMMARY:
The Life Safety Specialist supports the Director of Safety with the coordination of the Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital (JHACH) Environment of Care, Life Safety and Emergency Management programs. This position will be responsible for performing a wide variety of survey related activities ranging from Environment of Care/Life Safety inspections, document review and verification, management plan review and development, fire drill coordination, staff training and readiness reporting. Partnerships with internal departments such as Risk Management, Security, Maintenance and Regulatory Affairs will play a prominent role in the further success of this position. This position will also provide technical advisement to remedy non-compliance issues concerning federal, state, and local fire code as well as assist in the development of procedural guidelines, bulletins and related interpretation.
Hours: 40 Hours Per Week, Weekend and on Call Work Required

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Performs routine safety inspections at all JHACH campus locations and existing occupancies to identify fire and life safety non-compliance items according to Joint Commission Standards, federal, state and local fire code.
- Ensures recognized regulatory deficiencies are addressed in a timely manner to mitigate risk, preserve life, property and other tangible assets.
- In coordination with Security and Risk Management, the life safety specialist will plan, conduct and assess a series of programmed on-going fire drill cycles to meet all requirements of authorities having jurisdiction. Performs outreach and other Emergency Preparedness related training sessions for staff and internal audiences to increase procedure awareness.
- Reviews plans, blueprints, equipment standards and related processes to ensure compliance to life safety standards. Provides technical advisement to management regarding relevant fire code standards and conformity concerning renovations of existing structures or facilities.
- Develops, evaluates, processes and maintains a variety of files related to fire prevention and suppression activities. Ensures campus-wide record keeping practices meet or exceed regulatory requirements relative to life safety standards.
- In coordination with local fire officials, performs annual regulatory fire prevention/life safety inspections and systems test. Ensures regulatory deficiencies identified by state or local officials are corrected and reviewed prior to follow-up re-inspection.
- Coordinates the Interim Life Safety Measure processes that need to be enacted as a result of compliance issues and deficiencies. Performs follow-up activities to verify compliance related items are corrected in a manner that meet regulatory standards and expectations.
- Attends a variety of continuing education classes, seminars and meetings to remain current on applicable codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Provides hands on training, demonstration and technical guidance pertaining to the proper use of fire extinguishers and other fire prevention methods.
- Serves on Environment of Care and Emergency Management Committees/councils as requested and regularly reports on findings.
- Other duties as assigned to support JHACH operations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Fire Science or related field.
- Masters in similar concentration preferred and at least five years of experience in fire prevention, suppression and regulatory life safety code compliance.
- Master's degree will substitute for 2 years of work experience.
- Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional CHEP preferred.
- FEMA Certified Trainer preferred
- Requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills combined with a diversified and complex approach to analyze and interpret specific and non-specific information in a decision-making process.
- Has contact with a wide variety of people requiring the ability to use a high level of tact and diplomacy.
- Requires discriminatory handling of confidential information
- Must have a record of successfully demonstrating initiative, self-direction and independence of thought, coupled with a diversified and creative approach to problem solving. Must have a record of demonstrated achievement in directing a work force.
Salary Range: Minimum 27.44/hour - Maximum 43.91/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
