Experienced Tooling Engineer

5+ years of experience in a tool design or mechanical design role for a manufacturing environment.

Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., Creo/Pro-E, CATIA, SolidWorks) and the creation of detailed 2D drawings with GD&T.

Hands-on experience with the complete tool lifecycle: requirements gathering, design, fabrication, and implementation.

Fundamental knowledge of structural analysis (FEA) and common fabrication methods (machining, welding, additive manufacturing, etc.).

Experience designing tooling for aerospace, composites, or large scale assembly.

Experience performing structural analysis (FEA) to ensure robustness and safety

Experience designing, analyzing, and certifying load-rated lift equipment.

Proficiency with a specific PLM system (e.g., Windchill).

Hands-on fabrication experience (machining, welding) is a strong plus

DUTIES:

Tooling Design & Analysis: Design and model tooling concepts in 3D CAD (e.g., Creo/Pro-E), Create detailed 2D drawings with appropriate GD&T for fabrication.

Requirements Definition: Partner closely with internal stakeholders, systems, manufacturing, industrial, and design engineers to capture tooling requirements, ensuring designs are optimized for operator safety, ergonomics, part quality, and manufacturing cycle time.

Fabrication Management: Manage the procurement and fabrication of tooling by working with both internal machine shops and external vendors. Create statements of work, track progress, and perform inspections to ensure tools are built to spec.

Implementation & Validation: Oversee the commissioning of tooling on the factory floor, which includes proof-loading of lift fixtures, validating tool functionality, and developing work instructions for proper use.

Design for Manufacturing (DFM): Serve as a key tooling and DFM resource during New Product Introduction (NPI), providing critical feedback to the design team to improve the manufacturability of the satellite product line.

Tooling packages for simple tool designs: 3D Models and 2D drawings shall be to the standards outlined in ASME-Y14.5

Develop concept of operations (CONOPs)

Analyze specifications to author tooling requirements

Assist in SRR, PDR, and CDR content creation

Prepare preliminary stress analyses for safe operation of tool under prescribed loading and handling forces

A completed tooling package will include: requirements, completed 3D models, completed 2D drawing, completed design reviews, and tool instructions

Some tooling packages will require additional support deliverables such as stress analysis, and/or procurement analysis
