DESCRIPTION

The Halicioglu School of Data Science and Computing (HSDSC) is composed of the founding units the Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI) and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). HDSI will serve as the academic core of the school and SDSC will serve as the operational and translational science core.

HSDSC will have strong academic interactions and affiliations with existing UC San Diego Schools and academic departments including; Jacobs School of Engineering, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Arts and Humanities Biological Sciences, Health Sciences and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. These relationships and interactions will support the goal of transforming data into knowledge through development of data and information science, advancing innovative computing paradigms, and developing new contextual learning algorithms and methodologies that can transform society.

$125M Endowment with the primary mission of advancing the field of Data Science.$93M Research & Core funding, 50+ faculty spread over 16 distinct academic disciplines/departments across 3 Vice Chancellor areas, 1600+ Data Science students across Bachelors, Masters and PhD programs.

Working with the Director for Industry Relations and other members of the team, the Industry and Employer Relations Manager will play a critical role engaging companies in the HSDSC Industry Partner Alliance and corporate partnerships with an emphasis on talent programs. This involves analyzing industry and partner needs, participate in designing strategies to expand the industry alliance program, and implementing improvements through structured timelines and cross-functional collaboration. A key aspect is driving adoption of HSDSC talent initiatives, including experiential learning opportunities such as industry mentored capstones, scholarships, fellowships, scalable and customized recruiting initiatives, and fostering recruiting pipelines. By leveraging tools like the 12Twenty platform, the role connects students with internships and career opportunities, ensuring that partner organizations gain access to a highly skilled data science talent pool.

Industry and Employer Relations Manager will have a strong emphasis on outreach and relationship development with industry partners. This requires proactive communication tailored to partner needs, highlighting how strategic alliances with the University's research programs create mutual value. The role serves as a bridge between industry and academia by facilitating outreach activities, building connections across divisions, and maintaining regular collaboration with faculty, staff, campus partners, and corporate stakeholders. In addition, it manages and strengthens long-term relationships with talent acquisition leaders, enhancing HSDSC's visibility while offering opportunities for partners to engage with students and alumni.

Industry and Employer Relations Manager will focus on expanding and maximizing partnerships through strategic growth initiatives. This includes analyzing existing agreements, recommending ways to extend collaborations, and coordinating with financial staff, Advancement, and campus contracting offices to manage renewals, data sharing, and industry engagement activities. The role ensures that partnerships are not only sustained but continually evolve to meet the changing needs of employers and align with HSDSC's strategic goals.

The position will also plan and execute events with an emphasis on creating high-impact programs that connect students, alumni, and industry leaders. The role contributes to the design and delivery of both in-person and virtual events, including career development activities, experiential learning showcases, and recruiting initiatives. It also requires careful budget development, cost analysis, and ROI evaluation to ensure that events and programs provide measurable value to both partners and students while strengthening HSDSC's position as a hub for industry engagement.

Communications and reporting are important functions. This includes assisting with marketing and communication plans for academic, industry, and government audiences, as well as managing outreach and distribution tools. By maintaining accurate records in Salesforce and 12Twenty, the role ensures consistent tracking of industry interactions, employer engagement, and alumni connections. This reporting function supports data-driven decision-making and provides transparency into the effectiveness of HSDSC's industry and talent programs.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Working knowledge of university-industry academic agreements and contracts.

  • Proven customer service and relationship management skills, including the ability to interact in a positive manner with diverse constituents, including campus colleagues, industry partner contacts of varying levels of seniority, administrators, community members, and governmental agencies.

  • Advanced knowledge of industry/university relations & student recruitment programs.

  • Proven experience in the full spectrum of business development of corporate partners including critical analysis, management of academic/corporate relationships, recruitment for membership, sponsorship of special events.

  • Experience in developing and managing comprehensive, multi-faceted programs designed to broaden support and enhance institutional outreach. Experience in planning, implementing, evaluating, and budgeting for such a program.
