DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Join the Residential, Retail and Supply Chain Services (RRSS) team at UC San Diego, a dynamic and innovative campus department dedicated to delivering exceptional service to the university community. POSITION OVERVIEW

Plans, organizes and coordinates the daily activities of the staff of Facilities and Building Services (FBS) in support of university specific routine work, small projects, preventative maintenance, and emergency requests. Develops long range maintenance/repair plans and preventative maintenance plans for equipment in areas of responsibility. Formulates solutions for housing and dining facility problems, creates projects and generate the appropriate contract documents to perform solutions by contract when necessary, and performs appropriate contract oversight. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Responsible for supervising all building maintenance activities. Provides leadership to ensure a team approach to work performance and provides direction according to established policies and management guidance. May oversee and participate in more complex maintenance projects. Be available to respond to urgent calls about RRSS facility problems during other than normal duty hours, resolving them in a timely manner. Assists other areas and supervisors as needed with an emphasis on engineering and utility projects.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • College degree with a major in business administration, architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, or related degree and/ or three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in management of physical plant operations.

  • Experience in supervising facility maintenance and improvements along with building maintenance work to include one or more of the following: basic plumbing and pipefitting, carpentry, painting and plastering, service of machinery, electrical maintenance and custodial. Hands-on experience in electrical or mechanical skilled trades, including experience at journey level in one of the skilled trades.

  • Experience supervising daily operations, developing work standards, and providing technical and organizational guidance to work teams in a supportive work environment.

  • Experience managing a technically complex, diverse and widely dispersed work team. Training and/or experience building a successful work team by supporting individual team members, maximizing skills and providing advice, information or materials as needed.

  • Experience managing in a union environment.

  • Solid knowledge of policies and procedures relative to facilities maintenance, equipment, customer service, dispatch, building maintenance, safety and emergency preparedness.

  • Experience in developing an operating budget and effectively managing allocations.

  • Ability to make short and long range plans for the maintenance, repair, and renovation of facilities.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including active listening, critical thinking, ability to multi-task effectively, persuasion / negotiation, mentoring, leadership / supervision, problem solving, operations analysis and quality control analysis. Ability to effectively work individually or in teams and ability to communicate effectively with people of many diverse backgrounds including students, staff, faculty, and customers. Ability to proactively and professionally handle a variety of situations at various levels in the University community from line staff, building systems operators, management and faculty.

  • Knowledge of contracting practices including ability to develop scopes of work, cost estimates, and necessary contract request and performance acceptance documents.

  • Strong hands-on working knowledge, skill and troubleshooting ability in the areas of Residential buildings and utility systems *Maintenance and repair of cafeteria equipment and supporting utilities. *HTHW and CHW systems, compressed air, steam, potable water, electrical, and plumbing systems for commercial and residential applications. *HVAC control (pneumatic and electronic) systems *Operation, maintenance, and repair of steam generators *Chemical treatment programs for mechanical equipment and plumbing secondary utility distribution systems. *Fire sprinkler and alarm systems *Landscaping and hardscaping *Multiple story building structures and roofing systems *Carpentry, masonry, and sanitary and storm sewer systems

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches and wiring diagrams technical, verbal or written instructions and guidance by trade practices, Manufacturer or underwriter's specification.

  • Training and/or experience leading and motivating a diverse team, setting clear expectations, and building a work environment that is collaborative and motivating.

  • Knowledge of the Human resources (HR) processes, including recruitment, performance management, and staff development, as well as relevant labor laws and regulations.

  • Skill and ability to manage stressful situations, multiple deadlines and difficult people in a calm and professional manner. Temperament and skill to provide an open climate and create opportunities for communication and positive interactions.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $100,100 - $187,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $47.94 - $89.80

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
