Summary:

The Research Analyst provides firm-wide research and reference support for attorneys, paralegals, and staff. This position is full-time, exempt, and works under the direction of the firm's Research & Knowledge Services Manager. The Research Analyst will work in the firm's Phoenix office. This position may accommodate a hybrid schedule of working 2-days remotely, once fully trained.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Legal Research


  • Perform comprehensive legal research across a wide variety of practice areas and jurisdictions
  • Compile legislative and regulatory histories
  • Compile 50-state surveys
  • Advise attorneys, paralegals, and staff regarding research strategies and resource selection for specific projects
  • Advise attorneys, paralegals, and staff regarding the use of specific electronic and print resources
  • Cite-check, proofread, and edit court pleadings, transactional documents, publications, and other documents


Non-legal Research


  • Perform public records searches and background research on companies and individuals
  • Perform business development, competitive intelligence, and client development research
  • Perform scientific, medical, technical, statistical, historical, and other non-legal research


Public Records, Document, and Resource Retrieval


  • Research, prepare, and manage public records requests
  • Locate and borrow or purchase articles, court documents, books, and other resources


Training, Current Awareness, and Professional Development


  • Conduct research training and prepare instructional materials
  • Set up and monitor alerts for legal developments and news items
  • Maintain expert working knowledge of legal, information, business, and other relevant industries
  • Maintain expert working knowledge of research resources and technologies
  • Participate in local and national library and legal associations


Administration


  • Evaluate research resources and technologies and assist with decisions regarding electronic and print subscriptions
  • Assist in the design and maintenance of the firm's intranet and knowledge management systems
  • Work with the research team to ensure the department supports the firm's strategic and operational goals efficiently and cost-effectively
  • Work with the research team to assess the firm's research and information needs and continually improve services provided
  • Assist with department marketing and development


Perform other tasks and assume other duties as assigned

Skills and Competencies


  • Manage a heavy workload, competing priorities, and multiple tasks effectively under tight deadlines
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of a wide variety of print and electronic resources
  • Demonstrate a fine attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to tailor research strategy and resource selection based on time and cost constraints and other considerations
  • Evaluate, analyze, and synthesize information from diverse sources and package in a user-friendly format
  • Demonstrate excellent written, oral, presentation, and technology skills
  • Analyze problems and develop effective solutions
  • Exercise sound judgment and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Work collaboratively with attorneys, paralegals, and staff and delegate tasks as appropriate
  • Develop other skills and competencies as required


Education and Experience:


  • A professional or graduate-level degree (or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience) required with a strong preference for a J.D. or a Master of Library and Information Science
  • Legal research experience is required
  • Business and competitive intelligence research experience is strongly preferred
  • Previous law firm experience is strongly preferred
