BNSF Railway | Diversity Employer
We are a critical link that connects consumers with the global marketplace. For 170 years, we have played a vital role in building and sustaining this nation's economy.
Accessible, productive, growing.
THIS IS BNSF.
BNSF Railway is one of North America’s leading freight transportation companies. BNSF operates approximately 32,500 route miles of track in 28 states and also operates in three Canadian provinces. BNSF is one of the top transporters of consumer goods, grain and agricultural products, low-sulfur coal, and industrial goods such as petroleum, chemicals, housing materials, food and beverages. BNSF’s shipments help feed, clothe, supply, and power American homes and businesses every day. BNSF and its employees have developed one of the most technologically advanced, and efficient railroads in the industry. We work continuously to improve the value of the safety, service, energy and environmental benefits we provide to our customers and the communities we serve.
Our Vision and Values
Our vision is to realize BNSF’s tremendous potential by providing transportation services that consistently meet our customers’ expectations.
A vision statement is only as good as the people who work to bring it to life each day. To live the vision, BNSF's employees embrace a set of shared values:
- Listening to customers and doing what it takes to meet their expectations
- Empowering one another, showing concern for our colleagues’ well-being and respect for their talents and achievements
- Continuously improving by striving to do the right thing safely and efficiently
- Celebrating our rich heritage and building on our success as we shape our promising future
Success in living our Vision & Values is evident when we fulfill the highest expectations of our four key stakeholder groups and when:
- Our customers find it easy to do business with us as they receive 100 percent on-time, damage-free service, accurate and timely information regarding their shipment and the best transportation value.
- Our employees work in a safe and secure environment, are focused on continuous improvement, share in the opportunity for personal and professional growth available to all team members and take pride in their association with BNSF.
- Our owners earn financial returns that exceed other railroads and the general market as a result of BNSF’s superior revenue growth and operating ratio and a return on invested capital that is greater than our cost of capital.
- The communities we serve benefit from our sensitivity to their interests and to the environment in general, our adherence to the highest legal and ethical standards, and the participation of our company and our employees in community activities.
Diversity
We've covered great distances in our diversity journey at BNSF, and it all begins with every employee valuing the differences we each bring to the workplace.
As a company, the road to greater diversity began with a vision. Equipped with a destination, leaders throughout BNSF developed a business purpose and strategic plan for moving the company to its diversity goals. While this formal program sets the commitment and direction for diversity, it’s the men and women of BNSF who have taken initiative, demonstrating leadership and bringing diversity alive in the workplace.
Diversity is a continuous journey at BNSF. By embracing and appreciating each other, our work experience, our jobs and our lives are enriched.
Our People
BNSF team members drive the railroad’s success. We pride ourselves on the talent and diversity that our employees bring to BNSF. Our work is important to our customers, our families, our communities and our country. We hire the best, keep them engaged, empower them to do what’s right and invest in their professional development and well-being.
Safety
Safety is the most important thing we do at BNSF. Our safety vision is a workplace free of accidents and injuries. To achieve this vision, we strive to continuously improve safety through training, education, innovation and investment. One way we promote safety is through our Approaching Others program, which encourages employees to approach co-workers about safe behaviors and practices. BNSF also promotes safety within our communities. We’ve helped train more than 10,000 first responders in communities across the rail network. Thanks to our employees’ commitment, BNSF is a safety leader in the rail industry.
